Fire Closes Monticello Walking & Biking Trail

A Monticello walk/bike trail is closed after a fire burnt 100 to 150 feet of the bridge that crosses the Sangamon River on Wednesday evening. The iron bridge over the river was saved, but the wood deck on the eastern half of the bridge was heavily damaged. City officials said the blaze was difficult to fight since water was limited and access was tight. Monticello Fire and Rescue Department was assisted by Mid-Piatt Fire Protection District.
